Information for athletes – Heliporting

Please kindly note that helicopter operations on Swiss territory will be carried out by private companies. As these operations are the sole responsibility of the athletes concerned, participants are strongly advised to take out private liability insurance, as costs incurred will be billed to them.

MIXED RELAY RACE

In mixed teams of 2 athletes, the relay is an intense race where the course is completed in around ten minutes. All the technical skills of ski mountaineering are on the programme, and the handover, a strategic moment in this event, can tip the race in favour or against one team. Start and finish: at the bottom of the Hameau ski lift in Les Crosets.

VERTICAL RACE

A formidable race, the vertical race is a pure ascent, with no descents or manipulations. Straight up the slope, only the fastest, most powerful, and precise skier triumphs at the top.

SPRINT RACE

The most intense event in ski mountaineering! Short and explosive, the sprint race consists of a fast ascent and descent, with a crucial on-foot section where athletes carry their skis on their backs. It’s a high-adrenaline mix of gliding, technical handling, portages, transitions, and downhill speed—completed by the best in under three minutes. Every strategic decision counts!

After the qualifying round, where each athlete starts every 20 seconds, the finals are contested in heats of six, in a head-to-head format similar to ski cross.

Spectacular and thrilling, this race keeps the action compact, allowing the audience to experience every moment from start to finish!

INDIVIDUAL RACE

The individual race is an adventure event where runners compete individually against each other! The one-hour course is a mixture of climbs and descents in a mountainous environment. Endurance, mastery of handling and downhill technique are essential to stand out from the crowd and claim the title of best skier.

TEAM RACE

The flagship event: team races embody the spirit of ski mountaineering. Teamwork, mutual support, immersion in the mountains, and team strategy are at the heart of this competition. The most technical race, with extreme sections and impressive elevation changes, will test the endurance of the participants.
