Awaken your senses at Abondance Abbey. Breathe in the tranquillity of its garden, be captivated by the colours of the medieval frescoes, and let yourself be carried away by the serenity of the stone walls. More than just a visit, it’s an enchanting escape in the heart of the mountains.
An immersive experience between sky and stone in the heart of the Chablais region. Proudly overlooking the village, Abondance Abbey is not merely a historic monument; it is a journey through the history of Savoy. Founded by canons from Saint-Maurice, this gem of Gothic art shines with its elegant architecture and serene atmosphere.
A veritable open-air picture book, its medieval cloister houses a cycle of 15th-century murals of exceptional finesse, illustrating the life of the Virgin Mary. Beneath the stone vaults, the silence invites contemplation, whilst the light plays across the arches.
The tour continues in the former monastery with the exhibition ‘From History to Art: Sacred Heritage in the Abondance Valley’. Here you will discover a collection of precious objects and liturgical vestments, bearing witness to the abbey’s former influence. The abbey garden, meanwhile, offers a most pleasant, bucolic respite. This green oasis invites you to stroll and admire the architecture from a new perspective.
Round off your visit with the abbey church, the spiritual heart of the site, home to treasures (decorations and woodwork) and exceptional acoustics.
Whether you are a history buff, an art lover or simply seeking peace and quiet, Abondance Abbey offers an unmissable cultural stop, where the stone still seems to whisper the secrets of the monks who brought it to life.
