This iconic, historic long-distance alpine trail offers breathtaking panoramas, soaring summits, craggy passes, crystalline alpine lakes, glaciers, waterfalls, forests, and flora and fauna galore…

This is the granddaddy of alpine hiking tours, the legendary Tour des Dents du Midi. Inaugurated in 1972, it got its reputation for being one of the first alpine mountain marathons – organised over some 40 years. Non-marathon runners can do the tour over a few days, organising stopovers as you wish, stopping at mountain huts for cosy accommodation, rest and refreshment along the way.

This tour is suitable for hikers in good physical condition but is simple enough to be appreciated by families. It can be done in 2, 3 or 4 days from June to October depending on snow conditions. Its many variants also allow you to extend your tour, including the memorable climb to the Dents du Midi’s highest peak – the Haute Cime (3,257 m).

There are several variants of the Tour des Dents du Midi route. In general, however, you will pass by the following remarkable sites:

– The Auberge de Salanfe on the Salanfe reservoir
– The Susanfe Pass, the highest point of the hike (but for the Haute Cime) at 2,494 metres
– The Cabane de Susanfe
– The Auberge de Chindonne
– The Antème Lakes
– The steep Pas d’Encel passage, equipped with chains
