The Illiez Valley faces multiple challenges— from climate change, and rapid technological developments to shifting social habits. This fast-evolving landscape is shaking the foundations of tourism, making it more vital than ever to diversify and extend our offer year-round. To this end, via a strategic development plan called 2050 Vision and Objectives, local stakeholders have signed a pledge to help build a sustainable future.
In collaboration with the three municipalities, the Portes du Soleil Suisse SA ski lift company, the agricultural cooperative of the Vallée d’Illiez, Transports Publics du Chablais, accommodation providers, and second-home residents, a long-term strategic reflection has been initiated: “Vision & Objectives 2050”. This project aims to define the framework for resilient tourism development that is adapted to new economic, environmental, and social realities.
The vision is formulated as follows and is addressed to overnight guests, day visitors, second-home residents, seasonal workers, economic stakeholders, and the local population. Everyone should feel welcome and comfortable in the region:
The Illiez Valley—known as Vau-de-lie or Valley of Waterin the local patois—is a vibrant place to live, visit, and explore. Easy to access and enjoy all year round, this is a destination where authenticity meets innovation. The valley’s enduring appeal is rooted in a sustainable vision crafted by local partners to meet the needs of everyone who calls it home—whether for a weekend getaway, a seasonal stay, or a lifetime of memories.
With this vision, the implementation of the defined strategic framework will be carried out through multi-year action plans. An in-depth documentary analysis formed the foundation of this approach and made it possible to illustrate the major trends that will influence the tourism economy of the Illiez Valley and the context in which it will evolve. Best practices from other leading destinations were analyzed to serve as inspiration. The participatory approach that followed enabled consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including resource persons and external partners such as the Canton of Valais Economy, Tourism and Innovation Service, Chablais Région, Valais Wallis Promotion, the Valais Tourism Board, and the Antenne Région Valais Romand.
The project is guided by four strategic pillars
- Facilitate the region’s tourism and economic development with attractive conditions;
- Provide diverse tourism experiences for all visitors;
- Strengthen collaboration among local partners;
- Enhance accessibility through efficient public transport.
Guiding Principles
The guiding principles of the Vision & Objectives 2050 are designed to create a favorable framework for the tourism and economic development of the Illiez Valley. They emphasize the improvement of infrastructure and public services, as well as the preservation of natural resources, while promoting sustainable and resilient management of the territory. The current tourism offering will be strengthened, and each village in the region will ensure a minimum level of services to meet the needs of all users. Diversity among residents, visitors, and seasonal workers will be encouraged to foster better integration and conviviality. Collaborations with neighboring regions will be developed to enhance tourism appeal, while an innovative, agile, and ongoing approach will be adopted to meet the demands of a constantly evolving market. Finally, the active participation of all stakeholders will be essential to ensure cohesion and commitment to this long-term vision.
Looking to the Future
With this Vision & Objectives 2050, the Region Dents du Midi is charting a promising future for its tourism, combining authenticity, innovation, and sustainability. The defined framework will strengthen the region in the face of ongoing changes, while ensuring the satisfaction of the local population, second-home residents, local economic actors, visitors, and guests. This project consolidates the positioning and attractiveness of the Illiez Valley as a destination of choice throughout the year
