Closing concert – “Extravaganza”
To close this year’s edition, Rencontres Musicales de Champéry invites the Janoska Ensemble, an unclassifiable virtuoso group renowned for its art of dialogue between classical traditions and improvisational freedom. This festive concert offers a joyful and contrasting musical journey, at the crossroads of styles and eras.
From the Viennese refinement of Johann Strauss II to the popular élan of Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian dances, via Johann Sebastian Bach, Georges Bizet and Dave Brubeck, the program brings together classical repertoire, jazz and popular music with disconcerting ease.
Original works and paraphrases by František Janoska, inspired in particular by Beethoven, Strauss and Bizet, rub shoulders with emblematic pages such as Blue Rondo à la Turk or Yesterday by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. A concert under the banner of virtuosity, shared pleasure and joie de vivre, for a closing in panache!
Janoska Ensemble
The Janoska Ensemble, made up of the three brothers Ondrej, František and Roman Janoska, originally from Bratislava, and their brother-in-law Julius Darvas, a double bass player from a family of Hungarian musicians, is establishing itself as one of the most original and universal ensembles on the current music scene.
Their trademark “Janoska Style” fuses references from classical music to jazz, pop and other genres at an exceptional artistic level, creating a new musical form that is both innovative and accessible. This approach is distinguished by the rediscovery of free improvisation, once common in Baroque music, and by the spontaneous creativity that drives each of their interpretations.
Their virtuosity, their humorous and emotionally intelligent interaction with the audience, and their ability to transform familiar melodies into new works, generate enthusiasm and standing ovations in concert halls the world over. The band’s original compositions, often endowed with evocative titles, serve as veritable musical calling cards, revealing the personality of each musician while underlining their shared passion for improvisation.
From their gold-disc-winning debut album “Janoska Style” (Deutsche Grammophon, 2016) to “Revolution” (2019), a creative tribute to the Beatles, the Janoska Ensemble never ceases to push back the boundaries of the classical repertoire. Their commitment to teaching also leads them to lead international masterclasses and workshops, passing on their taste for improvisation to young musicians.
