Named for an impressive passage carved right into the rocky mountainside, this beautifully varied hike traverses shady forests and serene mountain pastures.
This is the perfect hike for surefooted nature lovers. In half a day, you’ll be treated to a little bit of everything, from dramatic rocky landscapes, to rushing alpine rivers and shady forest paths, to the flowering expanses of sunny pastures, dotted with flocks of sheep and traditional wooden chalets.
From Grand Paradis, follow the path past the covered picnic area and the Parcours Vita. Continue along the road to Barme, then, when you reach the bend in the road, take the gravel road on your left in the direction of Roc Coupé.
At 1,478m, cross the Sauflaz River over the Belle Etoile alpine suspension bridge and head home in the direction of the Buvette de Bonaveau.
After the Buvette, walk downhill through the Bonaveau forest, taking the trail at ‘Les Clous’ that will lead you past the Auberge de Grand Paradis.
Variation to the Cabane de Susanfe (difficult, red-and-white mid mountain trail):
Time: Add 2h45 and another 625 metres of elevation to get to the iconic Susanfe Hut. The path splits off from the Roc Coupé trail halfway between the Belle Etoile Bridge and the Bonaveau Hut. On the way to Susanfe you’ll need to traverse the redoubtable Pas d’Encel, a series of steep, rocky passages equipped with chains.
